THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER FOR THE SKIN 

Water is a fundamental necessity for life and is crucial for the optimal functioning of our organs. We are made up of 70% water and water accounts for 60% of our skin – the body’s largest organ.  Water plays a pivotal role in preserving essential skin components such as Collagen, Elastin, and Keratin, which are vital for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Furthermore, water is indispensable for skin metabolism and health, facilitating the processes by which skin cells repair and regenerate themselves. 

THE SCIENCE OF LIGHT WATER 

Water has a perfectly balanced molecular structure (diag.1). Each water molecule consists of two Hydrogen atoms (H) and one Oxygen atom (O) =  H₂O. These are bound together to form a perfectly proportioned triangle shaped molecule. 

However over billions of years and through constant exposure to atmospheric UV radiation, the molecule’s perfect proportions have become altered. Neutrons (tiny particles that help make up an atom) from our atmosphere have fused with the Hydrogen atoms, resulting in the creation of Deuterium (D).  The combination of Hydrogen and Deuterium is a ‘Heavy Hydrogen Isotope’. The Isotopes weigh down the entire water molecule, rendering the water ‘heavier’ (diag. 2). 

When the water molecule is ‘heavier’ and lacks perfect symmetry, it can disrupt the bonding properties of water. This hinders the water molecule’s ability to penetrate to the deeper levels of the skin and limits its capacity to form effective bonds with other ingredients. For a skincare product to be as effective as possible, it is best to formulate with the lightest water possible.  

HOW WATER WEIGHTS ARE MEASURED Water weights can be measured by assessing the concentration of deuterium, expressed in ‘parts per million’ (ppm). Typically, most water registers around 150 ppm. Interestingly, the ppm of water can vary based on factors such as location, altitude, water source, and treatment processes. For instance, city water usually is around 150 ppm. For comparison, melted Arctic Ice has a ppm of 90. Water with a ppm of less than 130 is categorized as Light Water. Our Swiss Alpine Light Water begins its journey in the stunning Alps, flowing into Lake Zurich, close to the Laboratory. In the lab, the water undergoes a patented distillation process, whereby it is put through a specially built 6-meter “steam column” designed to extract the Heavy Hydrogen Isotopes via evaporation. Simply put, Light Water evaporates at a faster rate and is collected, leaving the heavier water behind.
